[A few short hours after Rosa Parks’ arrest, Martin Luther King has found a way to sneak in through the back door of the prison. He needs to talk to Rosa immediately. The back door of the prison creaks open and Martin Luther King tiptoes in. His wet shoes make cringing squeaks after every step as he inches towards Rosa’s jail cell. He finally arrives at Rosa’s cell after walking through the cold, empty hallway. Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King begin talking through the jail cell as they know time is limited.]
[You can hear the tension in Rosa’s shaky voice from a mile away.]
Rosa Parks:We must not be treated like this.
Martin Luther King: I won’t stand for it.
Rosa Parks:There must be a way to stop it, to conquer it, I have an open mind.
[The sweat drips down the jail cell bar from Martin Luther King’s tightly clenched hands.]
Martin Luther King: There is no wall, there is no separation between us. There is no reason the whites should be considered superior, and no reason we should be considered nothing.
[Rosa Parks holds her head high, and her voice grows more and more confident as she continues to speak.]
Rosa Parks:Exactly. I am a black woman who is confident, and I will teach my future children to be confident. I will stand, and I will rise. I am not an item, we are not items. We are people. And we will not be pushed around, just as I said to the officer. And now I am here, standing in a jail cell, and I don’t regret one bit of my decision to say one simple word. As soon as I get out of here, the fight will continue.
Martin Luther King: And I will be by your side for the entire time. Together, united, we will be strong, just as none of them thought we would. We will fight it, just as none of them thought that we could. They can’t keep you in jail for this, Rosa. You will return soon and meanwhile, I’ll fix this, I’ll do my best to try.
[Martin Luther King peered around the corner and saw three angry security guards coming his way. He quickly exits through the back door.]
